New York book fair postponed to 2022
This month’s New York International Antiquarian Book Fair (NYIABF) has been cancelled because of the ongoing pandemic.
This year, many of the fair’s European dealers were not able to join due to the US travel ban and, more recently, the fair received cancellations from a signif icant number of American booksellers and was left with no choice but to cancel.
Originally set for September 9-12, the NYIABF at the Park Avenue Armory is considered the most important event of its type in the world.
Organiser Sanford Smith said: “The Delta variant of Covid-19 has become a concern and the US travel ban made it difficult, if not impossible, for more than half of the exhibitors to join us.
“This decision was not made lightly.”
“We are disappointed that the fair cannot go on, but for everyone’s safety – our exhibitors, staff and public – we have made the difficult decision to cancel.
NYIABF has chosen new dates for the event, tentatively taking place in April 2022.
Syon House hosts jewellery event
Fellows Auctioneers has teamed up with interior design and architectural history consultancy Historic Decoration to host a jewellery event at Syon House (the west London residence of the Duke of Northumberland) on October 19.
The day includes a guest speaker, jeweller Andrew Prince, who created some of the items seen in Downton Abbey, and the chance to try on some of the creations from the show. It also includes a tour of Syon House with Caroline Percy (who grew up at Syon House as the eldest daughter of the 10th Duke of Northumberland) and architectural historian Oliver Gerrish. Percy and Gerrish founded Historic Decoration in 2016.

Dallas museum buys Old Master
The half-length oil of a lady by Bartolomé González y Serrano bought by the Meadows Museum in Dallas.
The Meadows Museum in Dallas, Texas, has announced that it was the buyer of a Spanish Baroque Old Master at a Christie’s auction last year.
The half-length oil of a lady by Bartolomé González y Serrano (1564-1627) appeared at Christie’s Old Master evening sale in London on December 15 where it was bid beyond a £50,000-80,000 estimate and sold at £237,500 including premium.
The 3ft 11in x 3ft 3in (1.19 x 1m) canvas is signed and dated 1621 and is the first work by the artist to enter the Meadows’ collection and it is one of only a few portraits by González known outside Spain. It came to auction having descended through the family of Cuenca landowner and politician Julián Casildo Arribas y Arauz (d.1915).
The Meadows Museum is a division of the arts faculty at the Southern Methodist University and its main focus is the arts and culture of Spain.
BADA launches an art prize and grant
The British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) has launched an art prize to promote “significant art and antiques for the future”.
Finalists will be selected by a panel of specialists, including artists, art critics and curators.
The BADA Art Prize winner will then be determined by public polling and a £1000 grant will be awarded at the BADA Week reception in London in October.

Horowitz takes new Sotheby’s position
Noah Horowitz of Sotheby’s.
Noah Horowitz will join Sotheby’s in the newly created role of worldwide head of gallery and private dealer services. He was previously at ArtBasel where he was director of the Americas for the fair organiser. Prior to that, he was executive director of The Armory Show in New York for four years.
Flower appointed by Sworders
James Flower has joined Sworders.
Sworders has hired James Flower as a valuer in its Hertford office. Flower joins the auction house from Bonhams where he most recently worked in the Modern British & Irish Art department. Previously he worked at Lawrences of Crewkerne.
