Comprising just two vellum leaves, both finely illuminated in gold and colours in acknowledgement of those many years of service, this special memorial is preserved in a binding that on the front cover bears the recipient’s initials.
That binding is recorded as the work of ‘G.E. Strong, Lee, S.E.’, but Gloucestershire auction house Dominic Winter (20% buyer’s premium), which sold for £2200 the lot estimated at just £100-150 in an online-only sale of February 16, was unable find out anything else about his or her identity.
