Offered as part of a March 22 auction at TW Gaze (18% buyer’s premium), this large engraved and coloured, folding map that extends from Portobello Road in the north to Fulham Road in the south bore some old manuscript notes to the margins and was worn at the folds, but it came with the original green cloth wallet. The estimate was £400-600.

To Andy from John

The inscribed, early release copy of Single & Single by John Le Carré sold at TW Gaze for £700.

A 1956 first of Ian Fleming’s fourth James Bond book, Diamonds are Forever, was sold at £3500 and bid to £700 via thesaleroom.com, rather that the suggested £60-90, was a copy of Single & Single by John Le Carré.

Published in 1999, the latter was an example of the scarce promotional release version of the book, which had a variant dust-wrapper designed by Andy Bridge and was issued before the first UK trade edition.

This copy also benefited considerably from being inscribed by the author “For Andy with my best wishes…” – presumably for the designer of the dust jacket.
