The painting, which measures 2ft 6in x 2ft 1¼in (76 x 63cm), has a plaque fixed to the 3ft x 2ft 7in (91 x 79cm) frame reading Mrs. Elizabeth Mannering / F. Cotes 1726-1770.

Francis Cotes was a fashionable English portrait painter and a founding member of the Royal Academy who initially worked in pastel before turning to oil painting in the late 1750s/early 60s.

From 1763 onwards he employed Peter Toms, a specialist drapery painter, to execute the costume element of his portraits.

Bruneau’s portrait, which comes from a Boston, Massachusetts, estate, has an estimate of $5000-10,000.
