Frieze Masters dealers announced

Frieze Masters is celebrating its 10th anniversary, returning to Regent’s Park this autumn from October 12-16.

The fair, overseen by Nathan Clements-Gillespie, will feature more than 120 galleries, showing work from ancient to modern and runs along side the close by Contemporary art-focused Frieze London.

Among the exhibitors at Frieze Masters are Johnny Van Haeften, Hazlitt Holland- Hibbert, Van de Weghe, ArtAncient, Gisèle Croës, Peter Finer, Sam Fogg and Dr Jörn Günther Rare Books.

The Spotlight section of Frieze Masters will this year be curated by Camille Morineau (co-founder and research director of AWARE – Archives of Women Artists, Research, and Exhibitions) and is dedicated to women artists, featuring 26 of them (born between 1900-51).

Haley given MD role at Knightsbridge

Matthew Haley of Bonhams.

Matthew Haley has been promoted to managing director of Bonhams’ Knightsbridge saleroom.

He succeeds Jon Baddeley who is stepping back from management responsibilities after 50 years in the art and antiques world, 22 of them at Bonhams.

Baddeley will continue to act as a consultant to Bonhams.

Haley has been head of fine books and manuscripts at Bonhams London since 2013, a position he will combine with his new role. He joined the Bonhams books department in London in 2004 and then worked in New York and Los Angeles with the auction house from 2008-12.

Merged Paris event dates announced

The inaugural edition of the newly merged Fine Arts Paris & La Biennale will take place at Carrousel du Louvre from November 9-13 this year, it has been announced.

Eighty exhibitors across 14 categories will take part. It will move to the Grand Palais Ephémère in November 2023 and then the renovated Grand Palais in November 2024.

Phillips reports best half year

Auction house Phillips reported total sales of $746m for the first half of 2022, up 37% on the previous year.

The figures are its best-ever half year to date and it hopes to be on track to beat its record full-year total which was set in 2021 with sales of $1.2bn (up 32% on 2019).

Auction sales rose 30% to $590m for the first half of the year and private sales were up 72% to $156m.

The auction house said 44% of buyers across online-only and live auctions were first-time buyers at Phillips.

It will also open a new Los Angeles gallery this autumn in West Hollywood. The 2600 sq ft venue at 9041 Nemo Street has been designed by Formation Association and will host exhibitions, panel discussions and events.

Wormald to run new Chiswick sale

Chiswick Auctions has launched a new department and appointed a specialist to run it. Elizabeth Wormald, previously at Roseberys for three years, joins the west London firm and will lead its new Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples department.

Wormald, who has a background in Japanese contemporary art, plans her first auction for Chiswick on October 5.

Ewbank’s boosts vintage offering

Elena Jackson has teamed up with Ewbank’s.

Vintage clothing dealer Elena Jackson, who runs Foxtrot Vintage Clothing in Salisbury, has teamed up with auction house Ewbank’s as a consultant on vintage items.

As part of the new role she is putting together her inaugural Vintage Fashion & Textiles auction on July 28.

Ewbank’s is also expanding its sales programme to include specialist standalone sales of Vintage/Retro computer games following recent success in this field.

The hammer price for an original copy of William Shakespeare’s First Folio. Estimated at $1.5m-2.5m (£1.2m-2m), it sold for $2.5m including fees at Sotheby’s New York on July 21.
