However, despite the caution, it went on to make £9000, more than double the top estimate.

Why? Well, despite the lack of a cast-iron provenance, this shirt was believed to have been worn by Internazionale player Mauro Bicicli in the 1966-67 season.

More significantly for the Old Firm half of Glasgow involving green and white, that could mean he wore it in the May 25, 1967, European Cup final – won by Celtic 2-1. The ‘Lisbon Lions’ became the first British club to achieve that feat.

McTear’s said the shirt was “gifted to the Glasgow-based vendor by a Celtic player when they were a young child. They have had it in their possession since the 70s and are now deciding to offer it for sale.”

The classic black and blue striped Inter top includes an embroidered gilt bullion star over the Italian shield for the Scudetto (Italian football championship), is stitched number 10 to the reverse and has a label for atalasport.

Midfielder Bicicli (1935-2001) made 182 appearances in total over three spells at the Milan club.
