The 20th century British figurative artist is best known as a marine painter and an official war artist, but he worked across a wide range of subjects and styles.

He has, at various times, been compared to both Giorgio Morandi and the Italian Modernists, and to Franz Radziwill and the German ‘magic realists’, but his works are described as remaining ‘quintessentially English’.

Waterhouse & Dodd’s exhibition includes a group of small portraits, two of his New Forest paintings (an area where he lived with his family) and a number of coastal and beach scenes.

The artist’s estate first published his catalogue in 2003 so the online resource is a significant update.

The show will be running until December 22 at the gallery at 16 Savile Row (second floor).
