Bristol rose ryal sold at Timeline

Regional branch mints were opened in York, Bristol, Coventry and Norwich to cope with the new output.

This gold rose ryal (10 shillings) was struck in Bristol. Edward IV is pictured standing in a ship holding a sword and shield, with a large letter E in the standard and the letter B in the waves below for Bristol. The mint mark of a crown to the reverse further dates it to c.1466-69.

Although many of the accounts from this period are lost, it seems that only relatively small quantities of gold coins were struck annually at the regional centres – a fraction of that issued in London.

Deemed ‘extremely fine and rare’, it took £6100 at TimeLine on February 23.
