An Edward VII silver desk inkwell with accompanying writing box with an interesting provenance is estimated at £400-600 in the Country House Sale held by Mallams in Cheltenham on January 26.
With twin handles and bearing marks for Hukin and Heath, London, 1900, the inkwell, (21.5cm) wide and 616g approx overall, is inscribed Major General Robert Stephenson Baden-Powell.
The 19th century maple writing box, 14 x 6 x 9in (35.5 x 15 x 23cm), features a brass plaque inscribed Harold Soames.
Baden-Powell was the founder of the worldwide Scout movement and was awarded military honours during the 2nd Boer War. The box belonged to Harold Soames – an artist – who was his father-in-law.

Nine pictures by two members of the Benton End group, Lucy Harwood and Allan Walton, will go under the hammer at the Cheffins Art & Design Sale on February 24.
The pictures have been held in a private collection in London and the sale will coincide with the opening of an exhibition at the Firstsite gallery in Colchester, Life with Art: Benton End and the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing, which explores the lives and works of the alumni of Benton End.
The Benton End group, known as The East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing, was founded by Cedric Morris and his partner, Arthur Lett-Haines, in 1937. Initially located in Dedham, Essex, the school was moved to a 16th century farmhouse near Hadleigh in Suffolk called Benton End in 1938.
Harwood was one of the first artists to join the group in 1937, aged 43, and was one of the school’s longest-serving students. Shown here is Still Life with Paper Whites by Harwood, which comes from the Cedric Morris estate and has an estimate of £300-500.

This Irish neolithic bog oak canoe dating from c.2000BC has a guide of £2000-3000 when Bonhams sells the Jim Lennon collection in Edinburgh on January 26.
Carved from from a single log and measuring 6ft 10in (2.09m), it came from the estate of the Irish antiquarian Rev Con Auld.
In the 1970s Rev Auld had been driving through rural county Fermanagh when he noticed a group of boys tending a bonfire. On closer inspection, it transpired that the firewood being used was a number of bog oak canoes recently uncovered by contractors who were constructing a road.
Anxious for this piece of Irish history not to be lost, a price was negotiated for the canoe, which he carried away in a trailer.

A c.1930 model Alfa Romeo P2 racing car model – estimate €2000-3000 at Mullen’s on January 29.
Kevin Nolan’s first job was a bus conductor for Irish public transport provider CIE – and his first pay packet was spent on a Tri-ang model locomotive. He served an apprenticeship as a brass founder with CIE before moving to Dockrells hardware store. During a strike in the 1970s, he and a friend decided to open an antique shop.
Having committed all their resources to stock, they convinced the landlord to accept the rent after their first week’s trading. The week passed without a sale. Saturday arrived and the shop seemed doomed until a lady walked in, looked around and bought their entire stock. The strike ended but they never went back to Dockrells.
In time the business moved to Francis Street and became the City Brass Shop.
Nolan became an avid collector himself and, while model trains remained at the centre of his collection, he also sought out tinplate and die-cast models and toys.
His lifetime’s collection is offered in over 100 lots in Mullen’s Collector’s Cabinet auction in Bray, Co Dublin, on January 29.
