WHAT’S NEW FOR 2022?
For one thing, the dates. After a run cut short in March 2020 by reports of positive Covid cases right on the cusp of the pandemic, the fair has worked hard to return in person. However, with many events having been rescheduled in light of international lockdowns, it has moved from its normal spot in the spring calendar to the summer.
That means it follows hot on the heels of Art Basel (June 16-19) and overlaps with Masterpiece London by one day (not including Masterpiece preview on the 29th). But organisers are undeterred.
“This was a complex situation which required the input and flexibility of many different individuals and organisations to enable us to reschedule TEFAF Maastricht,” TEFAF chairman Hidde van Seggelen said when the dates were announced. “We are proud to join several other leading art fairs in June for a key moment in the art world calendar this year.”
The event also has a shortened run time, spanning just six days rather than the usual 11. It is also set to be smaller than usual, hosting 242 exhibitors down from the previous number of 285, and these will be spread around just one level of the exhibition centre rather than two.
There are 19 debut exhibitors (plus the six fresh faces in the Showcase section). Among those new to the main section of the fair are UK dealers Adrian Alan, Brun Fine Art, Kent Antiques, Thomas Coulborn & Sons and White Cube. Joost van den Bergh, who previously has stood alongside Ben Janssens, is taking his own booth for the first time (Janssens will continue to take his own stand).
