The auction, which will take place in Paris at Drouot on March 29, comprises almost 300 lots of furnishings that have been assembled over generations.

One of the main attractions will be a selection of pieces made by some of the best-known ébénistes of the second half of the 19th century such as Paul Sormani; François Linke and Henry Dasson as well as Trouille’s bookcase – a school of Nancy Art Nouveau piece attributed to Louis Majorelle.

Pictured here is a side cabinet by Sormani (1817-77), an ébéniste of Italian origin who set up in Paris in 1847 and was renowned for pieces richly decorated with gilt bronze mounts emulating earlier examples of Louis XV and XVI furniture.

It measures 5ft 2in (1.6m) in width and is made from ebony veneer and lacquered panels in Japanese style with gilt bronze mounts and a Spanish brocatelle marble top.

The cabinet is signed P Sormani à Paris rue du Temple 114 and has an estimate of €30,000-40,000.
