Estimated at just £100-150 at Kinghams’ (23% buyer’s premium) recent Fine & Decorative Arts auction in Moreton-In-Marsh, the 12¼ x 17¼in (31 x 44cm) signed oil on board was a small but rare example of the Budapest-born artist’s work emerging outside his homeland.

Having studied in Paris in his youth, Pór returned to Hungary in 1948 to teach at the Budapest Academy and played an important role in the development of Modern Hungarian art.

The work offered at the Gloucestershire saleroom on March 3-5 was dated 1933, meaning it was probably painted during his spell in Czechoslovakia (like many Hungarian artists, he left Budapest after the fall of the Hungarian Democratic Republic in 1919).

After a strong bidding battle, it was knocked down at £3400 to a Hungarian collector.
