Exporting worldwide its range of antique reproductions and table ornaments formed as birds, the firm exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition and at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (also known as St Louis World’s Fair).

Several fine works by Neresheimer & Söhne feature in the ‘silver menagerie’ offered as part of the sale of Selected Silver and Objects of Vertu at Noonans in Mayfair on November 29.

The property of a gentleman, the collection of more than a dozen Dutch, German and English silver animals from the late 19th and early 20th century, includes this large 11in (27cm) high model of a watchful heron.

Realistically modelled, with finely detailed feathers and a detachable head with downwards gaze, it has import marks for 1900.

Bought at Sotheby’s in 2008, it has a guide of £2000-3000.
