Francis Bacon (1909-92) held his first retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery on May 24, 1962. Comprising 92 paintings, it was described by The Times as “the most brilliant exhibition by a British living artist since the war”.

This 2ft 6in x 20in (76 x 51cm) poster promoting the Tate show features Bacon’s painting Head VI from his famous series of screaming popes inspired by Diego Velázquez’s portrait of Pope Innocent X and recognised as one of his greatest works.

It is priced at £2800 from poster specialist Tomkinson Churcher.
