The French artist was following in the footsteps of his famous colleagues Pierre- Auguste Renoir, Eugène Boudin and Paul Signac, all of whom were inspired by the Mediterranean landscape and captivated by the light at this location between Marseille and Toulon.
Van Ham in Cologne is selling this 10 x 13in (25 x 33cm) oil painting of Le Brusc by Guillaumin from c.1901 on May 16-17, guided at €12,000-18,000.
By that time, Guillaumin could already look back on a long career as an artist, even though he never achieved the fame of his long-time friends Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro.
In 1863 all three had participated at the first Salon des Refusés, which was established after the official Paris Salon had rejected almost two thirds of the entries by Impressionist artists who were considered to be far too revolutionary for the public of the day. As things turned out, the alternative salon was a phenomenal success, with over 1000 visitors a day, and marked the beginning of many great artistic careers.
