Among the lots in Criterion’s first auction from its Gloucester saleroom, a timed sale ending on January 31, was this set of six plywood ‘Pretzel’ armchairs after Norman Cherner for the Cherner Chair Company. They were hammered down at £2600 against an estimate of £400-600.
The auction house, with salerooms in Islington, north London, and Corsham, Wiltshire, has expanded its house clearance business through a new partnership.
Criterion is working with Dan Hodgson who runs a charity shop at Morelands Trading Estate, off the Bristol Road in Gloucester.
The new saleroom is sharing the location.
Customer team-up
Guy Jackson, Criterion general manager, said: “We teamed up with one of our customers several months back to open a charity shop which works in coordination with the house clearance business that we set up a little over a year ago called Criterion Carriage and Clearances Ltd.”
Hodgson runs the new saleroom and the charity shop as well as Criterion’s house clearance teams between Gloucester and London.
On Criterion Carriage and Clearances Ltd’s website it said: “Items that are not suitable for auction can be collected by our charity partners and donated to those in need. Items that are not suitable for either auction or charity are disposed of within specialist commercial waste recycling centres.”
The Gloucester saleroom will hold online-only auctions and its first timed online sale ended on January 31.
Jackson added: “The business focuses on providing online valuations, visits to customers needing house clearances and probate reports.”
The firm is also close to securing a saleroom in west London. Jackson said the new location should be open by April.
The company employs around eight full-time and four part-time employees in auctions alongside eight staff with four vans in its house clearance team.
