Offered during the Fine and Decorative Arts auction at Fontaine’s Auction Gallery (25% buyer’s premium) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on January 28, it took $27,500 (£22,825) against an estimate of £15,000-25,000.
As with all Black Forest carvings from the period it was actually produced in Switzerland, as the marking on both clock and stand Ulr. [Ulrich] Leuthold, Sculptures, Luzern, underlines.
The 550-lot auction performed well in nearly every category with a sell-through rate of 91%, said Fontaine’s.

The top-seller headed to a very suitable home. The well-executed Tiffany Studios window, Jesus in a Field of Lilies, went for $190,000 (£157,700), more than double the low estimate.
The c.1898 window, featuring plated, leaded and confetti glass, measured an impressive 9ft 11in x 7ft 5in (3.02 x 2.26m). Catalogued as in ‘very good overall condition’, it was consigned by a private collection in Danbury, Connecticut.
The winning bidder was a church in the western part of the US. The buyers told auctioneer and firm owner John Fontaine they plan to restore and install the window in the church.
