Building works at Bermondsey Square have once again rather blighted the much-loved weekly Friday antiques market run there since 1948.
Back in 2004 the market’s operation was severely curtailed by the redevelopment of the square which lasted for five years and was a gruelling time for the traders.
Bermondsey Antiques Market’s director Paul Kelly says of 2022: “It’s been a tough year – a couple of weeks after lockdown works started on recladding the buildings that surround the square.
“This reduced the stall space by more than 50%, which on the back of the pandemic kept many stallholders and visitors away – not helped by all access points to the square being severely disrupted.”
But good times are hopefully ahead as Kelly reports that the works were nearly finished.
He adds: “During the past year we were supported by a wonderful core of 25 or so stallholders who stuck with us. In the coming months, the market celebrates 75 years at Bermondsey, making it one of the longest-running markets in the UK, and we are planning a few events in celebration.”
