The only known surviving example of a letter from Maximilien Robespierre to Georges Danton was bid to €175,000 (£154,870) against a guide of €100,000-150,000.

The signed one-page letter, written on February 15, 1793, is an expression of sympathy and friendship following the sudden death of Danton’s wife Gabrielle in childbirth just a few days earlier.

The two men later fell out increasingly, though, disagreeing in their approach to the Revolution.

Danton, inclining more to moderation, was arrested, put on trial and sent to the guillotine in April 1794 only to be followed three months later by Robespierre himself.
