Measuring 17 x 22in (43 x 56cm) and signed and dated 1943 lower right, it is a late work prefiguring the Abstract Expressionist style on which the artist was an important influence.
It is registered in the Gorky foundation archives and in the catalogue raisonné and has also featured in two retrospective exhibitions on the artist: at The Whitney Museum in 2003 and the Pompidou Centre in 2007.
At Drouot it sold for €630,000 (£557,520).
