Both records were set by Gustave Le Gray, whose c.1855 albumen print Hetre, Fontainebleu, depicting a beech tree, made £380,000 plus premium only to be surpassed three lots later by his c.1855 albumen print of a seascape, Grand Vague – Sete, shown here, which fetched £460,000 plus premium. Both sold to an anonymous telephone bidder, though it is not clear whether the same buyer secured the two.
