FROM 1922 until the mid-1950s the Newton Abbot firm of the Quaker-owned Candy & Company, which in the early days traded as The Great Western Potteries Brick Tile and Clay Works, made some rather striking glazed Wescontree and Candy art pottery in addition to its more utilitarian products.
Using previously unpublished archive material, the author talks about the background to the company’s decision to make art pottery, illustrates the wares in colour and reproduces the surviving art ware catalogues, with line drawings of the pottery marks.
One for lovers and collectors of 20th century art pottery and the wares of the South Devon Potteries. The pages on the factory’s downward industrial spiral to its demise in 1998 make uncomfortable reading.
