The rather dampstained Stevengraph showing cyclists on penny-farthing bicycles, The Last Lap, was sold for £190 to Potter, who also gave £700 for the coloured litho Player’s Please poster of the 1940s.
In the same sale, a signed colour photograph of racing driver Ayrton Senna was sold for £800, and among books from the library of BBC Radio commentator Peter Bromley was a run of the first 24 Statistical Record annuals, 1971-94, that contain full statistics of flat racing. Bound in contemporary full calf, the set reached £1000, and that same sum was paid for a collection of 500 racecards formed over the last 40 years by commentator and racing journalist Robin Gray.
A near complete set of the Surrey County Cricket Club Yearbook from the years 1888-2000, comprising 96 volumes in varying condition, made £1000 and The English Test Cricketers, a supplement sheet issued by the Western Mail in 1932 on which 16 (of 17) oval portraits have been signed by the subjects raised £500.
An 1812 first of Pierce Egan’s Boxiana, rebound in half calf, was sold at £450.
