The jug was sold on behalf of Royal Doulton with the proceeds going towards a fund to erect a statue of Matthews outside Britannia Park, the home ground of Stoke City, the legendary footballer’s home club.

After a lengthy battle the jug sold to an English collector underbid by an American private for £32,200 (plus 12.5 per cent buyer’s premium) with the auctioneer’s commissions donated to the fund.
