Much of the show comprises an important selection of recently acquired, fresh to the market Viennese Jugendstil works. The exhibition is broadly based with late 19th and early 20th century furniture, metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, paintings, even a Josef Hoffmann-designed hammered brass biscuit box with the Wiener Werkstätte mark.
In addition to Hoffman, many other of the notable names of Austrian design are featured, among them Adolf Loos, Hans Ofner and, of course, Gebruder Thonet who around 1890 designed and made this bent beechwood, stained to rosewood and polished coat rack, right.
The coat rack is featured alongside all the other exhibits in an informative, well-produced hardback catalogue issued by Bel Etage.
Jugendstil in Bauer haus
UNTIL November 30 Vienna dealers Michaela and Wolfgang Bauer hold their autumn selling exhibition at their gallery Bel Etage at Mahlerstrasse 15.
