And to cater for the strong demand, South Yorkshire-based BBR Auctions plan on increasing their sales.“We are looking at expanding quite considerably and doing twice the amount of sales over the next few years,” said BBR Auction specialist Alan Blakeman.

He also plans to weed out low-value group entries from the advertising signs sales (such as groups of tins), devote more catalogue space to larger photographs of the better works, and start including dates in catalogue entries.

Their 365-lot December antique advertising sale was 87 per cent sold and netted £32,615. The shop display cabinets brought the biggest money with the top lot, a Highnetts cigarette display cabinet, 2ft 81/2in (83cm) high.

In a market dominated by UK collectors, this entry was taken to £1300 while a Fry’s Chocolate cabinet brought £1100. The buoyant market for Guinness material has been much publicised over the last year – a factor which Mr Blakeman feels has contributed to the increase in consignments. “The national publicity has led to twice as much turnover in Guinness material,” he said.
