The Zwinger porcelain collection, which comprises 12,000 pieces, includes the largest collection of 18th century Meissen porcelain in the world and the largest collection of 17th century Chinese porcelain outside China.
The collection was founded by Augustus the Strong, King of Poland (1670-1733), who had the Japanese Palace on the River Elbe in Dresden especially designed to house his porcelain collection. The collection has been housed in the Zwinger, the king’s former Orangerie, since 1962.
To celebrate the completion of the museum’s refurbishment, the Friends of the porcelain collection are holding a charity gala dinner on Saturday October 5, the funds from which will go towards the collection’s scientific research and to help finance a worldwide campaign to raise awareness of the Zwinger collection.
The gala dinner will take place in the Kurfurstensaal of the Kempinski Taschenberg Palais. Zwinger re-opens its doors in Dresden
After three years of restoration work, the porcelain rooms of the Zwinger State Art Collection in Dresden are to re-open to the public on Sunday October 6.
