Andwells, known for their Georgian mahogany furniture since Mr Heraty launched the dealership in 1971, are a regular call for American and Continental dealers. And it has been a living this dealer has loved.
He says: “I have had a wonderfully happy and fulfilling career and for this I feel really blessed. I now look forward to a period when I am no longer involved in buying and selling and can devote my time to some personal projects of a non-commercial nature.”
With, sadly, too many dealers closing doors involuntarily because businesses are already of a non-commercial nature, I must stress Peter’s point that the market’s perceived overall reduced interest in brown period furniture has not impelled his retirement.
He says: “Upon hearing of my intended retirement a tidal wave of goodwill from my clients carried off well over half my stock and I am quite sure much of the remainder will go in the weeks ahead. “I think that speaks for itself.”
A Georgian era ends as Heraty bids a fond farewell
AFTER 32 years in business, Peter Heraty of Andwells Antiques, Hartley Witney, Hampshire, tells me that on June 28 he “will lock the door for the last time”, a couple of weeks before his 66th birthday.
