The 18in (46cm) diameter charger of c.1933, notable for its large size, striking design and a typical Clarice colourway, was in “immaculate condition”, according to Christie’s specialist Joy McCall and had never been on the open market before. It was consigned by a lady who had inherited it from her parents and it had spent the last 30-odd years on top of a wardrobe. A bidding battle between the room and the phone took it to more than double the upper estimate with the hammer falling to the anonymous telephone bidder.
May Avenue charger does it for Clarice Cliff
THE auction record for Clarice Cliff was sent tumbling last week on May 14 when Christie’s South Kensington sold this May Avenue charger for £34,000, almost double the previous high of £18,000 paid in December 2001 at Phillips for a charger decorated with the Windmill pattern.
