CHLOE Sayer has been researching Mexican textile traditions since 1973 and Textiles from Mexico is one of the most recent of BMP’s excellent Fabric Folios sourcebooks. Vividly illustrated, much of this book appears as caption stories to the full-page, highly detailed photography of 20 examples of Mexican textiles taken from the British Museum’s collections.
These textiles have a vitality that is unsurpassed elsewhere in the Americas. The sense of colour and design is dazzling, especially where native traditions, such as Mayan or Mixtec, are coupled with post-Colonial influences to fabulous effect. These range from a 19th century rebozo, or shawl, made for a wealthy owner, to everyday pieces from Oaxaca and the author explains techniques and clothing styles in her key commentaries on these most vibrant of textiles.
