In no particular order I draw attention to that of Timothy Millett (553 items) issued annually. My attention was aroused by the Admiral Nelson 1805 medal by C.H. Kuchler. A very popular subject, £2250 would buy it if it is still available.
Another annual that I anticipate with pleasure is the A.H. Baldwin fixed-price list (477 items); a reliable work, with text by Daniel Fearon. It is whim, not prejudice, that I mention a medal for less money. Good value it must be at £120. The 1770 bronze portrait of Voltaire by Georg Christian Waechter is rightly described as a “most pleasing and attractive medal”.
Turnabout for Nelson and a Voltaire face…
There has been considerable reportage on the subject of commemorative medals at auction recently, and the considerable museum participation in auction sales. So spare a thought for the dealer who issues fixed-price lists. Two fine English fixed-price catalogues have recently thudded through my letterbox.
