The inscription Aide et Réconfort refers to the humanitarian effort of the United States during the Great War but also to the American military that tipped the balance in the final months of the conflict.
The plate, in good condition, carries an estimate of €3000-3500 as part of the July 24-25 auction to be held in Douarnenez (a Breton fishing village between Brest and Quimper) by Adjug’Art. Their website is www.adjugart.auction.fr
US welcome in Quimper
Quimper collectors will no doubt recognise this plate as quite a rarity. Manufactured by Henriot, c.1917, the design depicts Uncle Sam offering his support to the French people within a Stars and Stripes border.
