The 1936 Berlin Olympic Games were to be a grand demonstration of Germanic supremacy until the black sprinter Jesse Owens blew that concept right out of the water. Hitler was furious.

For all that, the Olympic medal of that year is a well-designed item. There was a bronze one in this sale estimated at a modest €125. It made €140 (£92). I rather regret not being alert enough to buy it. Likewise, I regret my sleepiness with a Zeppelin tie-pin which I also failed to buy. Estimated at €70 (£46), it realised just that.

Must try harder!
