Just over two years later, on March 30 at Bath auctioneers Aldridges (15% buyer’s premium), a private commission buyer set what appears to be a record auction offer for a work by Nicholson on paper when bidding reached £8000 for this signed and dated 1967 pastel, right, entitled A Nest of Rock Roses. The 15 x 22in (38 x 56cm) drawing had been formerly owned by the late David. R. MacGregor, a naval historian, who had bought it from the Crane Kalman Gallery in 1969, and it had remained untouched in its original frame ever since.
