Jacob had a lasting interest in Charles Filiger (1863-1928), staging the first-ever retrospective of his work in 1962, and publishing Filiger - L'Inconnu in 1989. Filiger's work featured at the André Breton sale in 2003, but remains rare at auction.
Nine of the 13 lots here were devoted to his essays in psychedelic geometry, Notations Chromatiques, and one of them, Visage de Face, right, a rough-cut oval approximately 9 x 11in (24 x 29cm), prompted the evening's only museum pre-emption - heading at €8000 (£5440) to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper, where it will enhance a collection of works from the school of nearby Pont-Aven. Eight works by Ensor all sold well, notably a 1937 oil and pencil Fruit still life, 8 1/2 x 13in (22 x 33cm), at €58,000 (£39,500).
