Held four times a year, this is the 58th staging of an increasingly popular fixture and it heralds a hectic week for photography buffs in the capital with major spring auctions at the London rooms and a number of galleries holding selling shows.
Organiser Richard Meara, himself a dealer in vintage photographs, who naturally stands at his own event, has brought together 50 dealers in 19th and 20th century images alongside contemporary photographers showing their own work and dealers in secondhand books on the subject.
The organiser miscalculated at the last outing and the February photograph fair was overbooked, resulting in the hasty addition of extra tables and some dealers being turned away.
The May fair is full to overflowing with the UK exhibitors joined by specialists from the United States, France, Belgium and Germany.
Among the striking images on sale are a group of photographs of Rhodes and Corfu dating from the 1860s; a series of prints of Yorkshire abbeys published by Delamotte and Cundall in 1856 and a rare, possibly unique, 1868-70 rendering by Julia Margaret Cameron of the Clogstoun children, whom she had adopted.
