The set seen at Bonhams had the first two of the three vols.
of 1787-94 in this special binding centred by a medallion of Athene
within a wreath of myrtle and laurel, the third being in recent
morocco backed boards. It brought a trade bid of £36,000.
Also seen in this part of the Bonhams sale were the two Sangorski
& Sutcliffe exercises in gilt excess one seen bottom right - an
1876 edition of William Morris' translation of Virgil's The Aeneids
that went to a collector at £13,000 and the 1843,
Mulready-illustrated edition of Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield
which saw a trade bid of £11,000.
James Stuart and his influential Neo-Classical Bindings
THE big natural history sale held by Bonhams on July 15 included a number of items that were in very handsome bindings indeed, but there was, too, a miscellaneous group of lots that included the fine example of the scarce and important neoclassical red morocco gilt bindings designed by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart for presentation copies of Stuart & Revett’s Antiquities of Athens, top right.
