Trumpeted as one of the capital’s largest and most exciting new art spaces, the Gagosian Gallery at 6-24 Britannia Street, off King’s Cross Road, WC1X 9JD (tel: 020 7841 9960) is the latest opening by 59-year-old New York dealer, Larry Gagosian. This brings his gallery stable to five – the others being in Madison Avenue and West 24th Street, New York, North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills and Heddon Street, London.
Featured in the inaugural show, which runs until the end of July at the new 15,000sq ft (1400 sq m) space, are 10 paintings, all completed in Italy earlier this year by American artist Cy Twombly (b. 1928).
The other opening is actually a relocation for Man Somerlinck’s Fordham gallery from Fordham Street to 11 Princelet Street, off Commercial Street, E1 6QH (tel: 020 7392 8868).
Set in an impressive warehouse space, the launch show, which continues until June 21, offers an extensive selection of works by Jonathan Wateridge.
New galleries raise London’s Contemporary profile
INCREASINGLY, London is showing its teeth as one of the world’s nuclei for international Contemporary art. And, with last week’s opening of two substantial commercial art galleries, its status is going only one way – upwards.
