Lucy Ryder Richardson, a former fashion journalist, and her friend Petra Curtis, a graphic designer, both live in 1960s houses in the Dulwich Woods and both are married to architects, so they know a bit about furnishing a place. Under the name showhome they sold Scandinavian and Contemporary design first from home and then from their website. Then, last year they started the events at Dulwich.
Lucy insists Midcentury Modern is not a fair, it is an event and they certainly bring in a new crowd anxious to buy from this mix of mid-20th century to contemporary art, furniture, ceramics, glass and textiles. Around 30 dealers and 12 Contemporary designers will be on the spot selling their wares at what is evolving into a very new kind of retail experience reaching the parts more conventional fairs do not reach.
Midcentury Modern opens at 10am with £3.50 admission, early trade admission at 9am costs £5.
New school of thought
TWO Dulwich ladies have successfully tapped into the trend towards 20th century design and on Sunday September 19 hold their third Midcentury Modern event at the 1960s Christisson-designed refectory at the famous local public school Dulwich College, on Dulwich Common, London SE21.
