A vase of this size was likely made to showcase Susie Cooper's talent at a major trade or industry show and it is also probable that the piece was decorated by the designer herself. The base is marked with an early triangle backstamp and a script signature.
The £3850 price was claimed as a record although, when premiums are added, it does not quite better the £3400 plus 15 per cent (£3910) achieved for a Panorama (blue motor coach) pattern ginger jar sold at Bonhams in 2001. It bettered a ginger jar decorated with stylised figures made for the 1924 British Empire Exhibition sold for £3000 at Sotheby's Chester in 1990.
eBay record for Susie Cooper
A Susie Cooper vase sold for £3850 on eBay on January 13. The vase, which measures just over 12in (30cm) high, is decorated with a hunter in a loin cloth stalking two deer or ibex close to a stylised tree – an unrecorded design of around 1931 or ’32. Similar pieces are known from a publicity shot taken in the 1930s although most were thought to have been destroyed during a hit on the factory during the Blitz.
