The 181-lot online art sale, which ended on April 28, set a new record total for an online art sale in Canada when it totalled C$2,126,100 (£885,875).

This bettered the previous record of C$1.4m Heffel set in April 2006.

The surge in the Asian art market boosted prices, as did strong international interest from collectors in Canada, the United States, China and Taiwan, especially for Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki. His 2ft 8in x 3ft 10in (81cm x 1.2m) signed oil on canvas, 5.11.62, took $625,000 (£260,415).

There was also unprecedented interest in five paintings by Indian artist Sayed Haider Raza, which took a total of C$665,000 (£277,085). The most notable was a 1959 signed oil on board, Peinture, measuring 18in x 6ft 4in (45cm x 1.9m) that fetched $220,000 (£91,670).

The paintings for the online auctions are exhibited across Canada in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal and marketed globally online. Heffel hold their Spring live auction in Vancouver on May 23.
