It was bought by specialist dealer Paul Reeves, who said the cabinet - with its heart-shaped lock and three bird-and-flower inlaid ebony panels - was among the exhibits at the 1905 Arts and Crafts Exhibition. The original drawings remain at the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Mr Reeves, who deals with major collectors and museums around the world, plans to keep the piece for the near future: "I just love the piece and will enjoy it for the time being, especially as it still has the original Voysey key," he told ATG.

The buyer's premium was 25/12 per cent.
