The model was made in the 1970s as part of the family of African animals created by one-time Poole Pottery artist Guy Sydenham.

In May, Cottees took £5000 for one of the two babies that went with this 16in (40cm) long adult and auctioneer John Condie was delighted to see the purchasers back in action for the parent piece offered on November 17.

They won it although they had to lock horns with the owner of the other baby rhino and, as a result, the parent piece went well past the £3000-4000 to sell at £7000 despite having a reglued horn.

Another sale star was the iconic ´Sun God´ tile panel by Tony Morris which features on the back cover of Leslie Hayward´s standard reference work Poole Pottery and was originally intended to be a coffee table top.

Consigned by a former painter at the Poole factory, it sold to a collector at £3800.

The buyer's premium was 15%.
