Offered across two sales, the collection helped make March a record month for the auctioneers.

Offered as part of an antiques and fine art sale on March 26, the terrestrial and celestial globes stood 3ft 9in (1.14m) high and had papers by J.&W. Cary of The Strand dated 1816.

The mahogany stands were missing the original compasses (typically inset to the tripod bases) but crucial to their commercial success was their large size - each globe measuring 18in (47cm) in diameter.

Expected to bring between £15,000-25,000, they sold to a local buyer bidding in the room on behalf of a client for £50,000.

The buyer's premium was 20%.
