The George II mahogany breakfront bookcase c.1755 in the manner of Vile and Cobb that made £55,000 at Lyon & Turnbull.
Standing 8ft 2in (2.5m) high, the bookcase appears in Ralph Edwards' The Dictionary of English Furniture, stating at the time (1954) it came from the collection of B. Coppinger Prichard.
The owner's family (described here as a Highland estate) are understood to have bought it from Partridge & Son.
Estimated at £20,000-30,000 at the sale on January 14, it was the subject of competion between three parties before it sold to a dealer bidding on the phone at £55,000.
The buyer's premium was 25/20%.
