Back in 1968, photographer Tom Murray spent a day with the Fab Four taking colour images of the group and creating a work entitled Mad Day Out – Summer of 68.
On offer at the charity auction is a framed photograph from that day depicting Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Paul’s pet sheepdog Martha.
Signed by Murray, the print is one of 19 such photographs in circulation.
Offered as part of the same lot is a copy of Murray’s new chronicle of his time working with The Beatles and of the Swinging Sixties in general. Tom Murray’s Mad Day Out has a print run of just 1000 and is not available in the shops. The 120-page work here is a ‘direct to fan’ edition presented in a slipcase with each copy having been signed and numbered by Murray himself.
The opening bid on the lot is £500.
Meet Sir Alex Ferguson
The sale, entitled The Ultimate Charity Auction 2016, is organised by Gina Long MBE whose charitable works have included fundraising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
For the auction, she has gathered donations from the world of sport and entertainment and the lots on offer include ‘VIP’ experiences at FC Barcelona, next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev and the Badminton Horse Trials. There is also an opportunity to record your own single at a top music studio or star in the next Football Manager computer game.
A 15-minute meet-and-greet session with former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in his private lounge at Old Trafford is also on offer and has a current bid of £1020 at the time this story was published. The lot includes pre-match hospitality for two and two matchday tickets for the Red Devil’s game against Watford in February next year.
The money raised from the auction will go towards supporting the following charities: Sarcoma UK, In the Game (the League Managers Association Charity), My WiSH Charity (supporting West Suffolk Hospital) and the GeeWizz charitable foundation.
