Around 200 lots from Sewell’s  (1931-2015) personal collection will appear at the sale, including works of 19th and 20th century British art as well as Old Master paintings and drawings.

The auction is expected to realise in the region of £2m, a Christie’s spokesperson told ATG. The lot estimates range from under £1000 to £600,000.

All the works to be offered at the sale were formerly in the home of Sewell, who passed away in September.

Sewell was a graduate of the Courtauld Institute of Art and worked at Christie’s as a picture expert for almost nine years between 1958 and 1967.

He would go on to be a controversial art critic for the London Evening Standard starting in 1984.

“Brian Sewell was, undoubtedly, one of Christie’s most colourful and learned former colleagues,” said Christie’s UK chairman Orlando Rock. “What always motivated him was his love of great art and its power to move and inspire, combined with his characteristic and acerbic wit.”

Christie’s will hold Brian Sewell: Critic & Collector on September 27.
