Auctioneer Robert Stones donned a tuxedo at the podium and guests were offered champagne and canapés ahead of the 100 lot evening sale comprising cocktail dresses, evening gowns, shoes and handbags. There were also 20 lots of jewellery, during the day sale.

The lots were from a single collection of the estate of an unnamed Cheshire socialite known in hunt and horse racing circles.

Robert Stones

Robert Stones of Nantwich auctioneer Peter Wilson donned a tuxedo to take the firm's vintage fashion evening sale last week.

Stones initially thought the full collection would raise around £15,000-20,000, however keen interest took the total to £27,000, with every lot finding a buyer. Other significant lots included a full length black wool and cashmere coat by Chanel which sold at £1100 and a Prada charcoal goat fur jacket with fox fur trim which sold at £850.

Friends and Acquaintances

Stones said of the deceased owner of the collection: “She was extremely well known, both locally and nationally, and her many friends and acquaintances bid enthusiastically to buy something to remind them of her. There were about 100 people in the room and the bidding was highly competitive.”

The vintage sale was part of a two day auction at Peter Wilson which included furniture. Highlights for this part included a three pedestal Regency style mahogany dining table, with two extra leaves, sabre legs and brass animal paw terminals, which sold at £1,900 against an estimate of £400-600. A Jacobean style four poster bed tripled its estimate to sell at £1,400.

Buyer’s premium is 20% up to £35,000, 17.5% from £35,001 to £100,000 and 15% from £100,001 and above.
