The Engravings of Charles and George Hunt 1820-1880: Racing coaching, hunting, landscapes & caricatures, by John Hickman, is published by Unicorn Press. It is the first major study of the two artists who are thought to have been cousins and contains 500 images of their 800 engravings.
English sporting print was at its height during the mid-19th century and the works that the Hunts produced would have decorated the walls of middle class homes. The works are based on original paintings by artists such as Henry Alken and James Pollard.
Hickman, the author, is a print collector who was inspired to start work on the book after spotting various omissions and inaccuracies in the Hunts’ chapter in Captain Frank Siltzer’s book The Story of British Sporting Prints – otherwise an essential for collecting. The Engravings… is Hickman’s first book.
The launch took place at the London Transport Museum and the book is available online. Additionally, there are signed copies on offer at Grosvenor Prints in Covent Garden for £60.
The gallery has also released a catalogue of the two Hunts’ works celebrating the publication of the catalogue. A few examples of prints that can be bought at the gallery and read about in Hickman’s book are listed above.
