Awarded for the 1963 friendly against Czechoslovakia, a 4-2 victory, it was one of three international caps being offered “by a direct descendant” of Moore that had been consigned to Mullock’s of Ludlow.
Moore (1941-93) was just 22 when he made his first appearance as captain - still to this day, the youngest-ever England captain. The cap had been estimated at £8000-10,000 in the November 20 auction and sold to a room bidder, thought to be UK based.
Online bidders snapped up another Moore international cap for a 1964 Portugal v England friendly, won 4-3 by England, for £5200 and a 1972-73 Yugoslavia friendly, a 1-1 draw, at £4400 (both mid-estimate sums).
The elegant defender won 108 caps in total from 1962-73, as a West Ham player for all that time. It stood as the most England appearances until overtaken by Peter Shilton, whose 125 remain a record. Moore won 90 caps as captain, equal with Billy Wright.
Moore made his first England appearance in May 1962, aged 21, when England beat Peru 4-0 in a friendly. The captaincy came in his 12th international match.
